The Cartographers' Guild, in partnership with the Soho Gallery for Digital Art, is hosting a map-making challenge: Mapping the Big Apple. The challenge runs from now until October 31st. Entry maps must be inspired by New York and be letter-sized (8.5" x 11") or larger at 150dpi. The top 45 maps will be included in an exhibition that will run from November 16th through December 12th at the Soho Gallery for Digital Art. The top three maps will receive a place of honor at the center of the gallery. More prizes may be announced. You can read the full contest guidelines here.
While it's not fantasy, the challenge is a great way to promote the art of digital (or traditional) cartography. I've thrown my hat into the ring, with a post-apocalyptic version of my favorite city - my work-in-progress thread is here. You don't need to be a professional cartographer to enter so come on over to the Cartographers' Guild, pull up a virtual easel, and map the Big Apple! |

All of the maps presented at the Terra Incognita gallery event are now available as limited edition art prints. The event's organizer has posted thumbnails of the maps here, along with ordering instructions. Please go check it out; even if you aren't in the market for a print it's worth a visit just to see the amazing maps on display at this event. |

The Haibianr city map is scheduled to appear at Terra Incognita, a digital exhibition of fantasy and sci-fi maps being held at the Soho Gallery for Digital Art in New York City from July 16th through July 29th. There is a reception from 6pm to 9pm on Wednesday, July 21st.
It and other maps will be displayed on flat panel displays on the gallery walls and prints (on high-quality canvas or paper) will be available for purchase. The event is open (free) to the public so I hope some of you New York gamers will be able to check it out!
If you haven't seen it, the map in question is to the right (click for a larger image). It received the Cartographers Choice award over at the Cartographers' Guild in October of 2009. Haibianr - The City of Ten-Thousand Alleyways is currently in development and will provide a detailed look at this cosmopolitan fantasy city.
